6 medium Gala apples, peeled and thinly sliced or shredded (about 6 cups)
2/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Pinch of nutmeg
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 box yellow or spice cake mix
2 sticks butter
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
Toss the apples with the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch. Let sit about 10 minutes so the apples release some juice.
Spread the apple mixture evenly in a 9x13 inch pan.
Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the top, straight from the box. Do not stir it in.
Slice the butter thinly and lay the pieces over the cake mix so it is mostly covered.
Bake 45-50 minutes, until the top is golden and the apples are bubbling around the edges.
Notes
Fresh apples replace the canned apple pie filling. No pre-cooking is needed with Gala apples since they are soft; they finish cooking under the cake mix.
Firmer apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp hold their shape more.
